2000 Viper GTS/ACR
Owner: Allen Ward
Location: Gilroy, CA
Team: Valaya Racing and International Allstars
This car has truly been taken to the outer limits. The sound of the exhaust is sure to make unsuspecting people jump within a 50 foot radius! The sound of 10 cylinders and this much horsepower is certainly unique. We had the pleasure of meeting Allen last year while attending various car shows. He showed with our group at HIN and IREV and we felt it was definitely a car we wanted to feature in order give our users an up-close and personal look at this incredible car.
A car this wild also attracts a lot of attention from passers-by, pedestrians, bicyclists and of course, the local Sheriff's department! Lucky for us they were understanding of our photo shoot and even pointed us in the right direction to the great view you see here overlooking San Francisco's South Bay. Enjoy!
| What is the primary purpose of your modifications? Racing, show or a combination of both? | |
The funny thing is, when I bought the Viper, I had no plans on adding anything to it, with the exception of the stereo. I guess you could consider me extreme. Before I knew it, I was putting in a show quality stereo system. Then I took my otherwise stock Viper to a Viper Days track event and saw all the cool race Vipers. I knew at that moment I would be tuning my car up. Except for the stereo, we've been using high-end endurance road racecar parts. After I blew my last motor at Buttonwillow Race Track last year and replaced it with a full dry sump race motor, I decided to focus on car shows. I still plan to track the car a little bit though.
| How much horsepower do you estimate to the rear wheels? | |
The motor was tuned on the engine dyno after it was built and we got a little over 900 horse. Once we get 1,000 on the motor, we’ll put it on a chassis dyno. We'll be expecting at around 775 horse to the rear wheels.
| What is your favorite single feature or part of the car? | |
That's an easy one. The new motor is a spectacular testament to American technology. The look, sound, and performance of the motor is pure "Shock and Awe". The classically beautiful, curvy, almost sexual lines of the Viper would be second. Just like the Ford GT40 from the 60's, the Viper GTS will be considered a beautiful car decades from now.
| What's next for the Viper? | |
I've got some carbon race doors sitting at home. We plan to finish the race cage with a side bar assembly and fabricate the front speakers into the bars! A full racecar with tunes! After that, we'll be looking for some big brakes. Then maybe a high-end engine management, data display, and telemetry system.
| All those mods you must have a great job and a lot of patience! | |
Yeah, I'm a Human Resources executive.
| I think I need a career change! Do you have any other hobbies besides cars? | |
I'm an audiophile, which is a collector fine audio equipment. I have several systems around the house for different purposes, but the system in my main listening room features the Genesis Technologies 350se speaker system and a pair of Pass labs X600 mono block amplifiers. I can't get tired of the wonderful sound that system makes. I also collect art and enjoy fine wines.
| Where do you see yourself and this car in the coming year(s)? | |
I'd love to team up and work closely with one prestigious sponsor. I believe the incredible attention that The Beast gets makes it a truly first class marketing tool.
| Would you do it all over again? | |
There is one car in the world I would trade for my Viper. The new Saleen S7. If I had to start over again today, I'd probably get one of those. But if I had the opportunity to start over back when I bought the Viper. No. At the time I was considering the Ferrari Modena and the Porsche 996 TT or a clean used Lamborghini. Shortly after buying my Viper, Fred Kinder, the VP of the Norcal Viper Club, told me that if I put some money into my Viper, it would pound those cars. Fred owns several Vipers, one of which at the time was in the process of getting a $75,000 tune up. I thought he was seriously crazy at the time! But I soon acquired the same addiction for power and have far exceeded him on my one Viper. Ted May, the owner of Valaya Racing told me if power is the drug that you get addicted to, that makes me the drug dealer! Bottom line, my Viper has far exceeded my expectations for fun, which is really what it's all about. Having fun!
| Tell us a short favorite story about the car. | |
No particular story comes to mind, but all the different looks and comments are priceless! I get people passing me on the freeway taking pictures, honking and giving me the thumbs up. The look on people's faces when I drive up is usually jaw dropping. At the SEMA show last month, a cigarette almost fell out of some guy's mouth! When I fire up the motor, unsuspecting viewers have been known to jump with surprise. I keep a top 10 list of 1st comments on the car. The most common is simply "Dammmmmm." The funniest one was when a young guy said: "I'd give you my left nut for this car! I don't know what you'd do with it, but you could have it!"
