NASCAR Nextel Cup racing roared into the valley of the sun this past weekend bringing some of the best racing action of the year to Phoenix International Raceway. Top Nextel Cup drivers Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle, Mark Martin, and many more drove to what was nearly a photo finish in the race, with several drivers actually running out of gas on the final lap of the race. In the end it was Kevin Harvick running his #29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet into Gatorade Victory Lane Saturday night, hot off his first place performance the night before in the Bashas' Supermarkets 200.
In a race that draws over 100,000 fans annually to the desert early on in the Nextel Cup series, many of those in attendance were certainly not disappointed. In addition to the hordes that line the main straight and the ever popular hillside, the views from the recently expanded Bobby Allison grandstands were second to none, providing an excellent view of cars coming into turn one in addition to a wider overall view of the track. Many fans were brought to their feet on several occasions as numerous crashes, including one caused by Clint Bowyer as he bumped pole-sitter Jason Leffler, brought on ten caution flags throughout the race.
NASCAR Nextel cup action returns to Phoenix November 12th, 2006 for the Checker Auto-Parts 500, the pivotal semi-final race in the chase for the Nextel Cup. Look to Car and Model for additional coverage of this event come November!
