There are several differences between Nightshift and Hot Import Nights. Each one has the custom cars, the hottest import models, and the killer stage shows. But whereas HIN shows are indoors, Nightshift happens outside. This of course provides the added room to spread out the fun. And when I mean fun, I mean fun that kicks up tire smoke, challenges the laws of gravity, and changes our minds at what normal cars and bikes are capable of doing.
The key to all of these extreme events at Nightshift involve talented people who know how to tame their machines. It is akin to breaking in a wild stallion. Sure, those machines have strength and power, but if you can control that, then you can really do some killer tricks.
At the Nightshift in Pomona, the fans were presented with three different types of extreme events. The NOS Energy Drinks Drift Demo showcased modified rear wheel cars as they powered through controlled slides on a coned course. This attraction wasn't hard to locate at the venue since these guys put out major tire smoke and engines roared as they tore it up.
The Boost Mobile FreestyleMX Worldwide Tour was set up in the middle of the venue and the riders were ready to defy gravity. Mother nature decided to kick up a steady wind at the beginning of the show, but fortunately it subsided at sunset. When the sun went down, the heat was cranked up as the riders performed tricks such as 360 flips, Superman, and other insane positions as they caught major air high above their trailer.
When it comes down to it, you've got to bring it, or don't even show up at the XDL Sportbike Freestyle Championship. This was round 3 and the riders in this segment of the event came from across America to compete. It takes a special skill to be able to control a bike on only one tire, but they were able to do this and other tricks to the crowd's delight. Nick Brocha came in expecting a top 5 after a tough outing at Nashville Nightshift, and bettered his expectations by taking his second win of the year.
New to this show was the Modern Muscle Mayhem (M3) display of tricked out muscle cars. Positioned at the entry of the show was an impressive display of Ford Mustangs, Dodge Chargers, Chevy Corvettes, and the new Dodge Challenger SRT8. By the looks of things a new era of muscle cars is upon us. Now all we need is that new Chevy Camaro, and it will perfect.
