California Speedway in Fontana, CA played host to the Grand American race series last weekend. Commonly used as a 2-mile D-shaped oval race course for NASCAR, it was reconfigured into a 2.8-mile, 21-turn road course for the Grand American races.
The Grand Am 250 (aka. Grand American Cup Street Stock Series) headlined Saturday's events. Cars that race in this series are actual production cars with only minimal racing modifications to enhance safety and performance. Four classes of race cars compete on the track at the same time, with drivers competing for top spots in their class, as well as for the overall win. You'll find everything from Acura RSXs to Corvettes to Porsches in this series. The #18 Porsche GT3 Cup (drivers Randy Pobst and Michael Levitas) took the checkered flag for the overall win.
Sunday's headline event was the Grand Am 400 (aka. Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series), and like the Grand Am 250, several car classes compete simultaneously...from the fast Daytona Prototype purpose-built race cars to the slower GT class cars which are factory-built race cars based on production chassis. The overall winner of the Grand Am 400 was the #58 Red Bull Porsche Daytona Prototype of Brumos Racing, driven by David Donohue and Mike Borkowski.
We've got a full weekend of coverage, including shots of the paddock area. Look in our paddock gallery for a few shots of a beautiful wide-body Ruf RTurbo (a tuner version of the Porsche 996 Turbo, as if those weren't fast enough stock)!
